Weekend with Quilts in the Wild

A Lovely Stay at Oak Hall in Vicksburg, Mississippi

On our way back from QuiltCon this year, we stopped at an amazing bed and breakfast in Vicksburg, Mississippi: Oak Hall .

From the Oak Hall website:

"The home was built by Fannie Willis Johnson and Junius Ward Johnson, well-known philanthropists of Vicksburg, and was later donated as a widow's home for Protestant women. It was affectionately known by the locals as "The Old Ladies Home.”

The home's design has been accredited to George Maher and was completed by New Orleans architects, Keenan & Weiss in 1910. The stately brick mansion boasts 32 original stained-glass windows designed by well-known interior designer Louis Millet, who also designed windows for the Mississippi State Capitol building. He also oversaw the design and completion of the Vicksburg National Military Park's infamous Illinois Monument. The Oak Hall interior proudly retains dozens of original lighting fixtures, 12 fireplaces, an original oil painting, pocket doors, an open and expansive interior lined with quarter sawn oak and recently refinished plaster walls."

It is so beautiful! The stained glass windows alone are worth the stay, designed by Louis Millet.

Quilty inspiration for sure!

There were many Quilt in the "Wild" photo opportunities within the rooms, and we took advantage!

Floria Quilt - by The Painted Bunting Studio

Wild Star Quilt - pattern by Plains and Pine

Heatwave Quilt - pattern by Tied With a Ribbon and releasing this month

But setting the quilts aside, this is one of this best BnB's we have ever stayed at! Oak Hall has:

  1. Modernized rooms (plumbing, a/c, wi-fi, bedding, tv: just like staying in a very nice hotel) with the beauty and grace of a 100+ year old home.

  2. Wonderful hospitality- the room (we stayed in the Delta Blues room) was immaculately clean, and Nancy was a delight to chat with over breakfast.

  3. Grab and Go pantry: I think this was Quilt Husband's favorite part! Drinks and snacks are available anytime in the kitchen pantry.

We also took in some of the sights around Vicksburg- highly recommend the driving tour of the Vicksburg National Military Park:

and a rooftop dinner at sunset at 10 South Rooftop Bar and Grill:

All in all, an unexpected delight on our way home!
